Heat & Moisture Standards
Our doors, like most are not indestructible; but with proper precautions and care, they will last a long time! The KCMA (Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturer's Association) standard for heat resistance requires that doors withstand 24 hours at 120°F(49°C) and 70% humidity without showing discoloration, blistering, or other material failures. All Semihandmade/BOXI door, drawer, panels, and trim parts exceed this standard. Our average heat resistance is 185°F (85°C); the range is 175°F-210°F (79°C-99°C). In regards to warping or peeling, many factors come into play such as proper ventilation, insulation, and proximity to appliances. Parts can warp or peel with consistent exposure to extreme heat and consistent exposure to high moisture.
Here are some precautionary actions to take to ensure your fronts last as long as possible:
1. Wipe off all liquids immediately.
2. Avoid direct sunlight.
3. Make sure appliances - especially dishwashers - are correctly installed and insulated. Consult the manufacturer specs as well as your installer to evaluate if heat shields are needed on the fronts or cabinets in the vicinity. Appliances may have vents on the sides, top, or back that may contribute to damage if not shielded properly. Damage due to excessive heat or moisture is NOT covered under warranty.
4. Never "vent" your dishwasher or oven by cracking open the appliance door. Using the 'self-clean' feature may cause damage to the surrounding material.
5. Never operate a top-loading toaster below wall cabinets.
6. Avoid close proximity to radiators, heaters, or mobile heating units.
7. Protect surfaces when using sharp tools or cumbersome equipment.

Overview: Heat deflectors are essential protective barriers designed to shield the edges of your new Semihandmade cabinet doors from the potential damage caused by heat or steam. These thin pieces of metal play a crucial role in dissipating built-up heat, ensuring the longevity and beauty of your cabinets.
Key Benefits of Heat Deflectors for Cabinetry
Protection Against Intense Temperatures: Cabinet heat deflectors are engineered to endure the intense temperatures generated by stoves, ovens, and other appliances.
Safeguarding Sensitive Materials: The materials used in Semihandmade doors, such as wood, finishes, and glues, can be sensitive to extreme temperatures or excessive heat exposure. Heat deflectors act as a protective barrier, insulating cabinets from both high temperatures and prolonged exposure, safeguarding against potential damage.
Ideal for High-Use Cooking Environments: Heat deflectors are particularly beneficial for cabinets near stoves, ovens, or other heat-producing appliances, making them perfect for kitchens with frequent and extended cooking sessions.
Types and Appearance of Heat Deflectors
You can find them at most hardware stores and on online retailers such as Amazon.
Material Composition:
Metallic Finish: Most heat deflectors are crafted from thin metal, providing an unobtrusive yet effective protective layer.
Variety of Finishes: While many deflectors have a simple metallic finish, some may come in a variety of finishes to match different kitchen aesthetics.
Design Variations:
Straight Edges: Common deflectors are a few inches wide and feature straight edges, providing a clean and seamless appearance when installed on the front edge of cabinets.
Custom Designs: Some manufacturers offer custom-designed deflectors, allowing homeowners to choose a style that complements their cabinet design.
Installing Heat Deflectors
Placement: Heat deflectors are specifically designed to sit on the front edge of cabinets, adjacent to the source of heat or steam. This strategic placement ensures effective interception and dispersion of heat before it reaches the cabinet doors.
Installation Process:
Identify Heat-Prone Areas: Locate areas where heat exposure is significant, such as near stoves or ovens and top/side vents of appliances.
Clean Cabinet Edges: Ensure the cabinet edges are clean and free from dust or debris.
Place Deflectors: Gently place the heat deflectors on the front edge of the cabinets, aligning them with the source of heat.
Secure in Position: Depending on the design, some deflectors may have adhesive backing or other securing mechanisms. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to ensure proper and secure installation.
In conclusion, heat deflectors offer a practical and visually unobtrusive solution to protect your Semihandmade cabinets from heat-related damage. Understanding the types, appearance, and installation process allows homeowners to enhance both the functionality and aesthetics of their kitchen cabinets effectively. Again, working with an installation professional along with the appliance manufacturer is key to choosing the right type and placement.
